Work undertaken: Currently jointly conducting research into employability and retention of graduates in their 'first destinations' workplaces. Involves gathering and analysing data to understand employers' expectations of graduates in their first post-graduate positions and graduates' expectations of their employers. This work will highlight the gaps and enable the university (and other HE institutions) to better equip graduates for the workplace. It is hoped that this first study will lead to a fuller ESRC funded study.

Work undertaken: BTR Project Consultant. Conducted an analysis of the effectiveness of the organisation's current Business & Training Review tool used for determining SME's skills gaps based on PEST and SWOT models. This tool is the basis of the decision making process for approval of fund-aided workforce training and development in SMEs which would otherwise be judged 'reluctant' to embark on training and development interventions. . On completion of the analysis phase, undertook research into current best practice and evolved BTR to reflect this.
Contract extended to enable design, development and publication of SME toolkit to enable them to maintain best practice approaches to a continuous process of Workforce Development.

Work undertaken: First work was as Interim Learning and Development Adviser with responsibility for managing a series of process workshops, redesigning the staff induction process, organising staff training and development interventions according to their assessment needs and all associated budgets and the design, development and implementation of various strategies required to support recognition under the IiP programme. Initial contract for this work twice extended.
Further contract with responsibility for reviewing, revising and implementing the local management process for the national reshaping programme including role matching, competitive selection, outcome notification and voluntary severance programme. Provided information, advice and guidance to Senior Management Team including Executive Director on local implementation process and to individual staff on the processes, their impact and their entitlements. This contract was twice extended.
Further contract with responsibility for managing the fledgling Local Skills for Productivity Alliance. He project managed the establishment of the LSfPA process and its first meetings, liaising with the other key funding partners: BLW, JobCentre Plus abnd SEEDA. Derek was considered for the rol eof project manager for this body but funding constraints subsequently meant that a secondment approach had to be adopted.
